Beginner’s Guide: Setting Up Your Ledger Wallet Safely

If you’re new to crypto, setting up a hardware wallet can feel intimidating.
But with the right steps, it’s actually straightforward — and it gives you the strongest protection against hacks.

This guide walks you through the official setup process in a simple, beginner-friendly way.

🔹 Step 1: Unbox and Check Your Ledger

Before you begin, make sure your device is brand new:

  • Packaging is sealed
  • No visible damage
  • No pre-set PIN shown

If anything seems off, stop and contact the seller.

🔹 Step 2: Go to Ledger.com/Start

Type Ledger.com/Start in your browser.

This ensures you are using the official setup path and not a fake site.

🔹 Step 3: Download Ledger Live

Ledger Live is the official app that manages your crypto.

  1. Select your operating system (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android)
  2. Download and install
  3. Open Ledger Live

🔹 Step 4: Connect and Power On Your Ledger

Use the USB cable to connect your Ledger to your device.

Follow the on-screen instructions on your Ledger device.

🔹 Step 5: Create a PIN Code

Your Ledger will ask you to set a PIN.

Best practice:

  • Choose a unique PIN
  • Avoid easy patterns like 1234 or 0000

🔹 Step 6: Write Down Your Recovery Phrase

Your device will generate a 24-word recovery phrase.

This is your backup key to access your crypto if the device is lost or damaged.

Do this safely:

  • Write the words in order
  • Never take a photo
  • Never save it on your phone or computer

🔹 Step 7: Confirm Your Recovery Phrase

Your Ledger will ask you to confirm random words to ensure you wrote them correctly.

🔹 Step 8: Install Apps and Add Accounts

In Ledger Live:

  1. Go to Manager
  2. Install apps for your cryptocurrencies
  3. Add accounts
  4. Start managing your crypto

🔒 Safety Tips (Most Important)

  • Never share your recovery phrase
  • Never enter it online
  • Store it offline (paper or metal)
  • Always use Ledger Live from Ledger.com/Start
